Earlier this year, I sent the following email to Steve Jobs and just forwarded it to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). I suspect many of us are deeply saddened by his death, both as a person and as a technology visionary. Apple is a big part of my life, as my email to Steve reveals. Cancer is also a big part of the reason for CLOUD.

Austin Nonprofit Advocates Building a New Internet Language to Link People and Data
[Austin, Texas] February 16, 2011
An Austin nonprofit is making waves with an innovative solution to the vexing questions of Internet privacy, identity and data portability. And the pioneering effort is gaining traction and visibility.
CLOUD, Inc., the Consortium for Local Ownership and Use of Data, is an Austin-based nonprofit dedicated to re-structuring the Internet to enhance privacy while facilitating connections between people and data.
“From WikiLeaks to Net Neutrality to Do Not Track, we hear a lot of concerns about Internet privacy, security, and transparency,” says Gary L. Thompson, Co-founder and CEO of CLOUD, Inc. “Often they’re treated as separate issues. But they result from the same problem – the way the Web is structured.”
Says Thompson, “The Web – the ‘presentation layer’ through which we see the Internet – requires us to enter our personal data into a series of disconnected databases on a series of disparate Web pages. CLOUD’s model frees information from these constraining silos. Data can exist anywhere on the Internet – but by creating a unique ‘WHO tag,’ we tie this information…

Austin Nonprofit Seeks to Reweave the Fabric of the Internet
Austin, TX | February 9, 2011
Do you ever feel that we live in a world of missed connections? Perhaps you’re on Facebook, but your friends are on LinkedIn. Or maybe you’re sick, and find yourself providing your detailed medical history to several, even dozens of, separate entities – in some cases to different people in the same building.
The reality is, the development of the Web – for all its potential and all the good it has done– has created some unforeseen consequences. One of them is that our need for privacy and our desire for connections are often at odds.
Gary L. Thompson, Co-Founder and CEO of CLOUD, Inc., believes it doesn’t have to be this way. CLOUD, the Consortium for Local Ownership and Use of Data, is an Austin-based nonprofit dedicated to re-structuring the Internet to enhance privacy while facilitating connections between people and data.
How can we do both at the same time?
“We need to radically redefine our relationship with the Internet,” says Thompson. ”Rather…
